In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, the Human Rights Center extends its heartfelt appreciation to Somaliland’s journalists and media professionals for their unwavering dedication to promoting an open, independent, and transparent media environment.
As the world marks 32 years of celebrating and defending press freedom, the Center recognizes the vital role played by Somaliland’s media in informing the public, pursuing truth, and strengthening accountability. Over the years, the country’s media landscape has made notable progress toward openness and independence.
However, as we celebrate these achievements, the Human Rights Center also draws attention to the continuing challenges facing media freedom in Somaliland. From January 2025 to the present, the Center has documented 32 cases of journalists being arbitrarily detained, three of whom have been taken to court and handed sentences. These actions reflect ongoing attempts to silence independent journalism through unlawful detentions, intimidation, harassment, and restrictive legislation.
Independent journalism remains a cornerstone of democracy. The Somaliland government must reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding journalists and ensuring their right to report freely, without fear, intimidation, or unlawful interference a right that is protected under the Somaliland Constitution.
The Human Rights Center commends the bravery, professionalism, and perseverance of Somaliland’s journalists who continue to uphold the public’s right to information, often under difficult and repressive conditions. Their commitment to truth and accountability captures the true essence of World Press Freedom Day.
