The Human Rights Center condemns the arbitrary arrest of journalist Ahmed Mohamoud Dool. He was arrested on August 5, 2025, taken into custody, and has been detained since then without any formal charges. He has been remanded three times in custody without being charged for sharing a Facebook post. Article 25(2) of the Somaliland Constitution prohibits the unlawful deprivation of a person’s liberty and states, “No person may be arrested, searched, or detained, except when caught in flagrante delicto, or on the issue of a reasoned arrest warrant by a competent judge.” Recently, there has been an increase in unlawful arrests of journalists, as recorded by HRC, which is a clear violation of the nation’s supreme laws and international human rights standards. Article 32(3) states that “The press and other media are part of the fundamental freedoms of expression and are independent. All acts to subjugate them are prohibited, and a law shall determine their regulation.” Furthermore, the Human Rights Center is deeply concerned about the intense pressure exerted on independent media in Somaliland.
The Human Rights Center calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained journalist Ahmed Mohamoud Dool and urges an end to the arbitrary and unlawful arrests targeting independent media.
