Journalist Maxamed Cumar Jaray Remains in Custody

Maxamed Cumar Jaray, a reporter for Boramanews website, has been in custody since the 13th of April 2016 in Borama. Maxamed was detained after he interviewed people singing the national anthem of Somalia. In a video clip published by the Borama News website, residents on the streets were asked by the journalist to sing the Somaliland or the Somalia national anthem as a part of a quiz program. The majority of the quizzed participants preferred to sing the Somalia national anthem instead of Somaliland’s national anthem.
Human Rights Centre calls for the immediate release of three journalists detained in Berbera

Human Rights Centre calls on Somaliland authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Abdirahman Mohamed Egeh of Somalinews TV, Ahmed Saed Mohamed, a reporter for Kalsan TV, and Mubarig Osman Saed of Star TV.
The three journalists were arrested in Berbera, 190 km from Hargeisa. Abdirahman Mohamed Egeh and Ahmed Saed Mohamed were arrested on 25th May, 2016, while Mubarig Osman Saed was arrested on 26th May.

On 29th May 2016, Abdirashid Abdiwahaab Ibraahim, chairman of the independent Foore newspaper, was taken into custody in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Hargeisa.

Somaliland: The Chief Justice Reinstates Guleid Ahmed Jama’s License to Practice Law

Today, 11th June 2016, the Chief Justice issued a decree annulling previous ministerial decision that revoked Guleid’s license to practice law. The ruling of the Chief Justice stated that the minister had no power to terminate the license. He also rules that being member of a human rights organization is not incompatible with legal practice. Guleid Ahmed Jama is the chairperson of Human Rights Centre.
On 16th May 2016, the Minister of Justice circulated a letter in which he revoked Guleid’s license to practice law. In his letter the Minister argued that Guleid’s work as the chairperson of Human Rights Centre is incompatible with the legal practice.
